It is very possible that this was a CIA hit meant to foment dissent against Putin.

Putin's popularity rating is very high in Russia. There is really no reason for the Russian government to do this. The recent visit by Merkel and Hollande shows a weakening American influence. The is the best of all worlds for Putin.

So why do this now?

This is not to say that the CIA actually did this. It is only to say that it is at least equally probable that the CiA did this.

With little true investigative journalism left, we will probably never know.

Ask yourself, cui bono? It is certainly not Putin.
